THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
So sad, the school is really going... Oh, all the memory of Tari Tari, Girls und Panzer...

Even though the title is named "Eri-chika", this is more an episode for vice president Nozomi and she is really making her presence felt !! And in both laughter and heartwarming sense...Her interaction with Niko is just so funny !!

Also Hanayo and Maki look so adorable.... and I laughed out so loud that out of the 7 members 3 got so shocked when they heard the condition imposed by the school head for their participation in Love Live Tournament X-D

My favorite part is where Nozomi confronts the "3 baka" on the roof intertwined with footage of Umi seeing Eri-chika dancing ballet as a little girl. The choice of BGM is perfect, first as an humorous take on the epic fear the 3 baka felt as Nozomi approaches them, but it works just as well as a theme for the grand looking past of Eri-chika. The flow of the shifting focus and the mix of humor and serious themes is very well done. I think the director really did a great job here.

We are seeing a bit more about president Eri-chika's background, and her sister is soooo cute (and voiced by none other than Akane from Vivired)... Although neither Nozomi or Eri-chika is in yet, I think both will join in the next episode.

So MAL finally starts locking news threads that are only a few weeks old?

I wonder where was the announcement of this change? Or we are seeing yet another case of changes made that impacted users but not communicated to them?

I wonder how long people would put up with this.

As much as I have a bunch of information to share about anime announced recently I cannot share it in news board, and the anime series is too disorganized and chaotic to share information except with people already interested in the particular series.

Oh I'm still enjoying watching Niko even though her stances does get repetitive sometimes. Shame there was no real song performance this episode but I still enjoyed it. Oh and it's nice to see Ayase in the spotlight a bit.

Watch the THIRD time and I noticed something that some fans managed to notice in the first viewing... A rare sakuga mistake:

Actually I think the part of Nozomi talking to Umi is also a sakuga mistake. Unless Nozomi asked Umi to come at a later time to talk to her, it would be hard to see how Nozomi would change into the shrine maiden's costume first before talking to Umi when Umi asked to talk to her alone.

It's not a mistake - they were so affraid of the punishment that their clothes changed by themselves into those suitable for learning.
It didn't help thou as Nozomi had other ideas about it (plus she has really big hands and dirty mind for shrine helper).

Nice episode in general, good to see that girls are still serious about singing, also Eri's backstory was interesting (also in terms of what Umi wants her to do).

I'm glad we finally got some background on Eri. I still think her reasoning for not acknowledging the group is weak, but atleast we have an idea of why she has sand in her nether regions.

If you are not joking, then I suggest you rewatch the episode. That change of clothes happened inside one scene. It is not as if they got back into school uniform in the club room. The clothes change happened in an instant while Nozomi was still approaching the girls and has not yet touched them. It is clearly a sakuga mistake.

Another nice episode. Now I know what Love Live means, and the girls are going to compete, if they passed all the exams, which put Nico, Rin, and Honoka in hot seat and grope punishment from Nozomi.

Sad, that the school will still shut down.

But what attracted me this epsiode is Eri's little sister. She's so darn cute! Aw...

Also understand that the group is able to do something able to do that the student council is not able to do, which is find an active way of saving the school. There is some bitterness and jealousy behind that as well. This added to the now mentioned reason of being a dance snob.

I loled' when the two Tsundere characters Umi and Maki got all the attentions

The concept of the Love Live! competition is predictable but it's necessary to spice things up from now on. I'm waiting for the finale when our group competes on stage with A-rise.

It's a little surprising to find out that Eri was the culprit behind that video recording (all the hints pointed toward Nozomi) though I don't see why doing that would hurt the group at all.

The reason for Erika to not joining the group was pretty weak but I have a feeling there would be more to her story than that. But no biggie, Honoka will find a way to coerce her into the group xD

Nozomi's teaching techniques are a little scary. Those three might have been traumatized.

The plot is a little formulistic, and it resembles one or two recent anime with the same idea, but the execution so far is very well done (setting aside some graphical mistakes this episode, which I'm not going to get upset about), and I'm enjoying it.

Honoka, Rin and Niko had to study crazily to pass their exams so that Muse wouldn't get disbanded. I lol'd so hard when Niko did that 'nico nico smile' thing and then Nozomi would grope her. xD Eri's sister likes Muse and turns out that Eri was a dancer herself, well specficially a ballet dancer. So they found out that the school would shut down for real next year. Eri, join Muse and the school will remain! >=D

I would hesitate to call Umi tsundere because Umi never gets much tsun in her. She is more a serious character who does not like to fool around, which is a trait Maki also shares.

And I agree it is very interesting to see the two most serious members in the group are also the two who get the "Demachi" (fans waiting outside) honor :-) And of course being the serious type both did not want to admit they are from the group at first :-)

ThangLong said:

Some fans are calling LoveLive as the idol version of Girls und Panzer. Of course a lot are different for the two anime, but there are indeed similarities between the two.

ThangLong said:

Me neither, and I think it is a clever idea from the screenplay writer.

I interpret what Eri said about taking the video in order to bring down the group as her tsundere trait on show. She is at her tsun-tsun stage now and I credit the screenplay writer for giving us some rather credible reason to believe what she said is not just a tsundere against-own-feeling blurting but rather that she indeed has some good reason to view all the school idol performance as amateurish (and given that she even views A-Rise as amateurish, it hints at how much she can improve Mu's dance performance to rival that of A-Rise).

Another key reason to believe that she did not record the video just for the purpose of bringing down the group is Umi's comment that the video Eri's sister was watching was not uploaded on the net. If Eri hated Mu's so much, why would she share those un-uploaded video with her sister?

ThangLong said:

My take is that Eri's sister would have a lot to do with Eri's decision to join the group. There are many reasons for Eri to want to protect the school, and that includes her grandmother being an alumni of the school, but I would say her love towards her sister is the decisive factor. Her sister clearly wants to enter her school, in fact seems keen on being an idol herself (flag for a 2nd season?), and given that the school head rejects the idea of student council wasting the limited remaining time to campaign for the school she may find only the idol route remains the possible salvation for her beloved school. My prediction is that this time it will still be Umi (with Nozomi) who will pull in Eri-chika. Umi clearly wants to keep engaging Eri-chika after knowing the reason for her rejection of school-idol but is encouraged by Nozomi to sort out the priority first (helping Honoka to pass the exam comes first), so I expect her to go back to persuade Eri-chika again in the next episode.

She said "it was decided" and it does not seem that decision is made by her. Perhaps she was present when the decision was made and perhaps she even had a chance to speak before the decision was made, but I would not say that it is in her power alone to decide to close the school.

In fact, the full name of the school is "National Academy of Otonokizaka" 国立音の木坂学院 which means it is a public school, so any major decision about the school would not rest solely on one person.

I think hat this has to be the best episode in terms of story. I think that introduction of Nico in episode 5 was the funniest, but episode 7 is really well done. I loved watching the girls have to endure the torture of studying and I LOL'd every time Nozomi kept rubbing Nico's breasts as punishment. If only more girls were like that IRL. Haha!

I was really surprised to find out about Eri and her sister being a fan. I can understand Eri regarding them as amateurs, but at least they're trying something to prevent their school from closing - that also happens to actually be getting a lot of attention from people. Hopefully, Eri will lighten up in the near future and support them.

Oh yeah. Your right. I suddenly remember the school in Tari Tari having the same situation as well.

But maybe...just maybe, if muse could win the LOVE LIVE idol competition, and rack in a lot of students, those figureheads could change their minds about closing the school.

I don't want the same thing to happen in Tari Tari.

Getting Eri and Nozomi to join the group will gain them a lot of advantage and challenge A-RISE head on

This is another reason why some fans are calling Love Live the idol version of "Girls und Panzer". It just might follow that pattern of saving a school facing closedown....

I have watched ep.3 again and now I see why Eri stepped into the recording studio and why the operator did not look surprised when Eri entered. It must be because Eri asked them to do the recording so when she entered the recording room the operator was not surprised. Kudos to anime staff for all these attention to details. Now it makes sense why out of all places Eri is found in the recording studio when Honoka, Umi and Kotori performed Start:Dash in the school hall.

Love, LOVE the OP! Bought the CD, the ED too. Full versions are awesome. B sides are wonderful too.

The OP CD comes with a DVD with a non-credit version of the opening animation which is great too. Between that and the BD that came with u's Best Album Best Live! Collection I am absolutely itching to get the BDs... and hope they fix the booboos...

Start DASH just shipped yesterday. Can't wait for the full length version!

Really didn't think I'd love this show this much. It is formulaic but as others have said, the execution is so good. Loved Tari Tari as well, and GuP, imported(ing) both and while the closing the school idea seems cliche'd it is a useful plot device, a great motivator to do your best for yourself and others.

As far as I know, China, Taiwan and HK also have 50% as passing line. To people from this side of the Pacific, it is the American system that looks odd.

Does your country have an education system influenced by America? Just curious.

Also, I want to add that I know at least in Japan and HK (not entirely sure about Taiwan or China) there are schools which use 60% as passing level. But I have never heard of 75% being used.

Actually if you pay attention (or watch the episodes multiple times like I do), you may find the OST of LoveLive is pretty good and its use in the anime is smart and spot-on. For example, in both the discussion about LoveLive event at the beginning of the episode or later when the scene switched to them about to knock on the room of the student council, I find the various BGMs help enhance the changing mood and atmosphere a lot.

Great episode, at this point I'm sure that this'll be at least a 2-cour show.

Seeing as a lot of people say the OP and ED sound great, I'll be downloading them in a bit to evaluate them. But since it is 2013, the music would've been mastered in 2012 or 2013 which usually means that it's shit. Perhaps this is an exception without hypercompression and low dynamics.
I'll edit it my thoughts in a bit.

Edit: O my god this sounds awful, it sounds flat and the clipping is so noticeable that it hurts my eats... What a piece of shit, loudness war my ass, stop ruining all the music.
Clipping all over the place and a really low dynamic range. I thought the current shitty "standard" is 6dB, but the OP is 5dB and the ED 4dB... Horrible.
Everybody will regret this in 10 years or so. "Oh company X released a louder CD, durp durp!"
It hurts my ears when I turn up the volume a bit, this only sounds sub-decent when I put my volume really low.

The OST that played while Nozomi was molesting the three girls on the roof was amazing. Loved listening to it.
I have been enjoying and buying the singles and wasn't thinking about buying the OST but now I may need to buy that as well...

Agreed, as I said I think I will need to order it now... This show is not cheap with all the CDs!

How can you tell from an mp3 rip? The discs sound good to my ears but I listen to my music LOUD so my ears may not be the best judge of dynamic range. I do think 48Khz 24 bit sounds better than 44Khz 16 bit but that could be my imagination.
